“Uniforms not Costumes” will be an engaging discussion dispelling Hollywood myths about what Civil War soldiers North and South actually looked like. The speaker will show clips from films and give examples of how 150 years sometimes distorts historical accuracy. Other topics covered are a history of the textiles, styles, and supply of uniforms and equipment for Confederate and Union soldiers. The talk will be given by Chris Clarke, a twenty year student, re-enactor, and maker of historically accurate Civil War military equipment.

School children in Arlington, Va., honored those who died at the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, tolling the bell at the county’s historic Hume School museum 184 times, 10 years to the moment that American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the building.

Twenty-eight Oakridge Elementary School students participated in the event, which also marked the opening of the museum’s new exhibit on the Pentagon and the 9/11 attack. The Arlington County Fire Department showed their support by sending a crew and engine to the ceremony

“The events held nationwide have honored all who died that day. We felt that it was our duty to remember those who died here in Arlington, who heroically gave their lives for their country,” Historical Society board member Ali Ganjian said.

The event drew neighbors, community members and former Pentagon employees who were in the building on that historic day.

Long-time Arlington resident Jon Brown brought his son Reid, 12, to the ceremony. Reid was in a day care center less than a mile from the crash site on Sept. 11, 2001

“We came here because the [National 9/11] Pentagon Memorial was closed for a private ceremony. We try to do something every year, to always remember those who died and those who worked so hard to save lives that day,” Brown said.

The museum’s Pentagon 9/11 Exhibit will become part of its permanent display. It contains numerous artifacts from the Defense Department, including the Pentagon’s heliport sign, which stood 50 feet from the point of impact and is visible in many photos from that tragic day.
